Settling in to work
The first thing I came across when I went to the Department of Linguistics was the posters that cover the walls and that display the work that various members of the Department have presented at different conferences. I was the first instance of what would become a recurring perception of some kind of travel back in time.

The posters can be found along this hallway, which has faculty offices, seminar rooms and other spaces on either side and at both ends:
Directly across from the elevator doors is the door to my office:

The office itself is a work-in-progress. It is totally my own because I don't have to share, but it is also totally empty as there is no decoration whatsoever. I am working on that, so hopefully in the coming weeks these walls won't look quite so bare.

I'm already working on a presentation I will be giving for the Department in 10 days and setting up meetings to make some headway with my project.
I also attended a couple of classes taught by some of my colleagues from the Department and hope to be able to attend some more. It's very interesting to get a feel for the atmosphere. Some things are exactly the same as they are at home, others are radically different and remind me of classes I used to attend both in the States and the UK. More on this probably later on.
At the end of the day, when I come back home after a hard day's work, I can relax on our little terrace at home with a view of the campus. Not bad, eh?
Lovely view! All the best on your presentation! Vanesa G.

DeleteA room of your own! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteAll faculty have their own office, but I was supposed to share with another visitor, only she moved to the Education Department and left me the office. As I recall, that's the same thing that happened when I was a visitor at the MIT. Lucky me! Although sharing is not bad either. It's organised like that so you have someone to ask questions about the place when you have doubts, etc.
DeleteI would love to share a beer with you in that terrace. Enjoy...
ReplyDeleteWorking on it!! Ha ha!
